Back from holiday

Today I'm back in work after two weeks off. The first week I was in Portugal with my girlfriend, and had a nice time drinking inexpensive booze in the sunshine. Second week was spent at home getting enough sleep and playing video games, reading books, watching tv and drawing comics. Back to the normal routine now. I think it's the 'getting enough sleep' I miss the most.

Have I mentioned my job here before? I know I've brought it up on www.nekothekitty.net before, but I don't think I've mentioned it on this site. It's an OK job, but it's that combination of 'stable' and 'dead end', so on the one hand I'm not going anywhere, but I'm also Not Going Anywhere. Pay's not great but the pension scheme is good and my contract is really solid. It's basically boring, but the compensation's good enough to keep me from quitting.

If I start making money from Neko then I'll be cutting down to part-time hours in work and putting out an extra page a week, but I'm a couple of thousand readers away from that.

Still, it was nice to not have to set the alarm clock for a couple of weeks.

I dunno if anyone has ever suggested this but have you thought of getting these published into books?

I'd like to get a book out, there's enough content in the original black-and white run to fill a book, and the colour run can be split into its component storylines for publication, but I don't think there are enough readers between the two sites to justify a print run yet.

A run of less than 100 books isn't really worthwhile (larger print runs=lower cost-per-unit), and standard webcomic wisdom is that about 1% of online readership will buy a book. 5,000 daily readers would translate to enough online sales to justify a print run of 100, with the remaining books on hand to sell at conventions. I just don't have those kind of numbers yet.

NtK is just too weird to find an audience quickly. I'm proud of it, and I'm really happy to have a couple of good fans, but it's too bizarre for mainstream, and not targeted to any specific niche. People who like it seem to love it though, so basically it's destined to either remain obscure forever, or become a cult hit.

I'm going to keep cranking them out either way. Eventually there'll be enough readers to make it worthwhile to commission books and plushies and stuff. That's a couple of years off though. It's slowly percolating through FaceBook and Stumble, once it hits a couple of power players I'm hoping it'll take off.

If someone like Seth Green stumbles on NtK and likes it enough to link to it then that'd probably be enough to bring me to semi-pro all in one go.

I cant remember, is Seth Green the guy who does Chris' voice on Family Guy?

Yeah, he does Robot Chicken as well, so I think he'd actually like NtK
