What *IS* latinum anyway? I know it's a highly precious unreplicatable goo in the Star Trek universe, but that's the extent of my knowledge.

Just something they made up. @NtKGar: Given Latinum cannot be replicated it makes gold pressed latinum valuable as a commodity of exchange since it can't be counterfeited.

It's referred to as a silver liquid that is incredibly dense, and complex, thus the inability to be replicated; and is mined from nebulae, as to an actual use outside currency I've never come across any reference to such.
