In comics Plan A is always to trust in the competence of your teammates. Anyone who's ever done a group project knows this doesn't necessarily work out in real life, but we're still in comics here.

A reader on the previous strip asked how you get started making a comic. Most of the cartoonists I know start out with some variation on depression and anxiety, but really anything that makes you imagine scenarios and inclines you to spend hours doing something for the approval of strangers will do.

Other than that starting a comic is easy, all you need is an idea and a way to get your comics onto a computer. There's really no right or wrong way to do it. For the earliest Neko the Kitty strips the panels and dialogue were done in Microsoft Word, then printed out and the characters drawn around the dialogue in pen and the pages scanned back in. I used Comic Sans for years!

There are all sorts of art programs you can use - I got Manga Studio a little while ago and am really liking it, but there are all sorts of drawing programs. If you're looking for something free then GIMP is arguably a more powerful tool than Photoshop, and I've heard the interface for it is a bit more intuitive these days.

Hosting for a comic isn't too hard to find, and again there are plenty of free options. You could set something up right here on SmackJeeves, or there's Comic Genesis or The Duck which are both pretty popular too, and of course let's not forget Tumblr.

It's really very easy to start a new comic and I'd encourage anyone to give it a try, it's a really rewarding hobby and a great way to practise your drawing. Don't worry about whether or not you're talented. I'm not talented. One of the things people like about reading the NtK archive is watching the art gradually get better, and that process is waaaay more gradual from my perspective. I'm not saying talent doesn't exist, just that after a while people tend to assume you have it.

Hope that all makes sense and/or helps!

lol yeah that is pretty much all there is to comic making
if i wasnt a lazy asshole who could put the necessary effort in to make a good comic, i'd probably have one.
until then, i have my stupid improv ms paint comic which is a joy to make. honestly making a comic is a great idea and everyone should try it at least once

For anyone looking to improve their art quickly, I suggest getting into comicking. It makes you draw A LOT and it's even better when it's something you're passionate about, like a story you've wanted to tell for years.
