So I've been visiting Tumblr semi-regularly for the last little while, and last months these two cartoon skeletons started popping up everywhere in little comics and animations and stuff. For a while I thought it was just a halloween thing, but after several weeks someone finally included the characters' names - they're called Sans and Papyrus - and I was able to google them. This brought me to a bunch of pages of fonts. Googling 'Sans and Papyrus skeletons' however led me to discover that they're from a game called Undertale.

Undertale is an RPG where you don't have to kill anyone, and it's wonderful. The graphics are kind of SNES style (which is how indie games achieve an appealing look with a limited budget and a small team of artists, this one looks a bit like Earthbound) and the music is good catchy chiptunes, but where Undertale really shines is in the writing. As I said, you can finish the game without killing anyone, so there are several actions you can take in the 'combat' screen to bring you to a peaceful resolution, and these are often very funny. As you progress you can also befriend boss enemies, and while they don't follow you around in an adventuring party kind of way you can actually explore each friendship a bit and get to know the characters better. There's Sans and Papyrus the skeleton brothers (Sans likes puns, Papyrus likes Papyrus), a fish lady called Undyne who's basically Martok from Deep Space Nine, an anime-loving dinosaur scientist with social anxiety and the celebrity-obsessed robot she created, plus the king, the queen, and a host of supporting characters. They're an awfully sweet and lovable bunch and in the best ending you help two of them get together as a couple, and it's the dorkiest, cutest thing ever.

The game has a couple of different endings based on how many monsters you kill in your playthrough, and as well as the whole friendship thing there are also a couple of dialogues exploring being able to save your game as a sci-fi concept.

I finished it with the best ending in two days, and while it's not a long game that was a whole afternoon and a whole morning dedicated to play. It's laugh-out-loud funny, narratively satisfying, and just super cute. No wonder Tumblr loves it.

This game recommendation brought to you by the society of people who don't have enough time/money/PC power for Fallout 4.
