Elmer Season

I’ve been hearing a lot about Cecil the Lion recently. A lion living in a park in Zimbabwe who was lured out of the reservation and blinded with a spotlight so an American dentist could fuck up shooting him with a crossbow. Cecil survived for 40 hours after this, at which point said Elmer Fudd motherfucker shot the wounded and exhausted animal with a high-powered rifle like a pussy. Here’s Jimmy Kimmel on the topic with an appeal to donate to www.wildcru.org/, which is an organisation which researches and protects lions.

Now I’m not actually against hunting. There’s plenty of parts of the world where people get their meat by tracking it through the wilderness and killing it. It happens right here in Ireland. I get my meat from a shop like most people, but I know what meat is and am happy with my position in the food chain. Hunting for an animal you’re going to eat is at least as ethically sound as farming it and I’d be a hypocrite to protest it.

Trophy hunting is, however, a totally different animal. I think we've commented on fox hunting before as being a totally unsporting sport with no justification beyond simple bloodlust, and I’ll lump lion hunting in with that category. I can understand the reasoning behind it, kinda - you’re pitting yourself against an apex predator who can easily kill a human. Man vs. Beast in a deadly game of strength and guile and all that jazz. There’s a lot of machismo in that, I get it. It’s pointless, but I get it.

And I think luring a park animal into a trap and blinding the fucking thing defeats the purpose entirely. Walter James Palmer didn’t kill a lion, he killed a fish in a barrel, and was incompetent enough to let it suffer for nearly two days first.

If you’re hunting prey and your objective is to kill something you’re going to eat, then guns and traps and killzones are the way to go. The hunt has a pragmatic purpose and you want to get the job done. Grand. You use the tools that are available, it’s all licensed and regulated and ideally doesn’t damage animal populations beyond their ability to recover in time for the next season. Broadly speaking, it’s a civilised activity.

Hunting predators just to show what big balls you’ve got isn’t civilised. It’s practically the definition of barbarism, and if you’re going to indulge in that sort of thing then do it properly and use a goddamn spear. Anyone could kill a trapped, blinded lion with a projectile weapon if they wanted to. Give me a covered pit and a bucket of hand grenades and I could hunt Big Game too. There’s no bravery or honour in it, you’re just murdering something in cold blood because you’ve got the money. You’re not proving anything, it’s just blood for blood’s sake.

If you’re going to pit yourself against nature’s greatest predators for the sake of some messed-up notion of machismo, then if the odds of you getting killed for your bloodlust and hubris aren’t at least 50/50 then what’s the fucking point?

Props Touchy subject, I know, but I wanted to thank you for offering your honest opinion about Cecil. I wholeheartedly agree.

actually.... The dentist had someone else shoot it, because he "doesn't believe in carrying a firearm", he's actually killed 43 different "big game" animals, including a polar Bear, and a black bear-which he technically poached(shot it 40 miles outside the area he had a permit for, the proceeded to lie to FEDERAL GAME OFFICIALS, and ended up with a year's probation and a $3,000.00 fine). So yeah even bigger jerk.

Ugh! i agree wholeheartedly with your POV! yes, i love my meat, and hunting, REAL hunting, is an ok thing, but this? reminds of a report on so called 'tincan-hunts' i saw a while back, where they tranq the animals and even pull out their teeth and claws before letting them near their 'hunters'...who can then kill the groggy lions as easy+harmless as shooting at a tincan.
btw, did you hear who was caught paying 75T for the right to shoot an elephant? spains honory chairman of animal protection. go figure...

@PeyaLuna: That must be the Spanish Guy that had Jimmy Kimmel confused. Daaamn, he must have lied the hell out of his resumé.

Hmm For me it's a pretty clear line: you don't kill carnivores unless they're attacking you or more than a reasonable amount of your intended prey. Predators need to be left alone, there aren't enough of them in the ecosystem to harvest. They're our bros, man. They eat what we eat: stupid herbivores. So by all means, british guys on horseback, go take your dogs out to hunt some hapless creature, but make damn sure it's a rabbit or something.

I've always been of a mind that for it to qualify as hunting, you need to at least eat the damn thing, and even better if you use it's pelt, bones and other such useful bits where applicable. If you're killing something just to take a trophy to say you did, you're not hunting, you're just being a dick. And not the good kind.

@LilithMae There's a good kind of dick for a person to be?

(I think she's undeploying the metaphor)
