The ginger/black pairing is most common in litters of kittens where the mother is calico or tortoise patterned. My childhood cat was a tortie, and had kittens when I was very small, so it could be these two were originally pulled from a memory I don't remember.

Anyway, I'm not actually sure how genetically likely Poe and Keno are, so if anyone in the audience is an authority on genetics, now is your time to shine.

Speaking of time to shine, it's the first of the month, and that means voting has reset at Top Web Comics. We got to number 17 last month, let's see if we can break that top 15!

Oh...also, Hi! It's me, Gar! Remember a little while ago I was talking about adopting a pen name so as not to clash with the 'Gar' character any more? Well, I figured with the new signature fully worked out, now was the time.

I like 'The Cat' as a variation on 'The Dude'. It gives me a +2 bonus on pulling off wearing a bowling shirt. Plus there's the whole double-meaning with the comic.

Heh, for a second I was thinking 'wtf is that guy doing on the author comments?' :P Also, y no new whitespace neko? Okay, ik there's a good chance I'm just being over-impatient right now, but you just told us to vote there without giving the incentive, sorta. If that counts as a valid reason to argue this point. Unless you've been doing the 'Comic on Mon-Wed-Fri Whitespace on Tues-Thurs-Sat' thing and I haven't been paying attention :P.

Its True I fucked your mom.
Just Ingenious

@Sup: Whoops, had the vote incentive image set to start displaying on the first of April instead of the first of March. 'Tis fixed now.

Bursting Bubbles Well... Unless Maisy is a closet calico, it looks like Keno is genetically impossible. Only the mother's genes determine the color of males in the litter.
If she did happen to have a spec of red hiding somewhere, then any boys she and Neko had would be 50/50 black or ginger.

Reply GabrielsThoughts, March 2nd, 2013, 2:50 am

@DolopODog You forgot how cartoon genetics works. Two completely different species can mate and have hybrid babies that can pass on genes while only reflecting one line of parentage.

Long story short a "pigeon" and a "jaguar" can have a "fox" as their biological offspring because of recessive genes, and I regret loosing the link to that comic after reading so much if it.

Even her bo,' who was a wolf or something, thought she was adopted.

Reply NtKPaige, March 2nd, 2013, 3:29 am

Different Dads @DolopODog: I know with dogs its possible for sperm from different males to fertilize different eggs, I assume it would be the same with cats?

Reply DolopODog (Guest), March 2nd, 2013, 5:07 am

@NtKPaige Yep, cats work the same way. Someone might have to talk to Keno about the birds and the bees and whatever else tapped that.
Edit: But no matter who the father is, since Keno is a boy he can only inherit a fur color from his mother. (It's on the X chromosome)

@GabrielsThoughts Not to mention the stork. After a night on the town he's just shufflin' babies!

Reply HwoThumb, March 2nd, 2013, 7:33 am

Neko is a great dad.

Reply NtKGar, March 2nd, 2013, 3:02 pm

@DolopODog: would a calico grandma explain it?

Reply DolopODog (Guest), March 2nd, 2013, 4:17 pm

@NtKGar Well a recessive gene from a grandparent might explain features like patches of white, or variations in fur shade. But the two possible base coats cats can have are always dominant XO (Black) and Xo (Ginger).
If Maisy was a carrier of her mother/father's ginger gene (XO Xo) then it would show in her as a tortoiseshell or calico coat, unless it was covered up by white.

If Maisy doesn't show that gene, there are still some ways for keno to have a ginger coat. Most common being chimericism. (ie: Maisy could be a chimera, her fur could be XO XO but her reproductive system could be XO Xo. In this case Keno can be Xo Y, and Poe XO Y)

The odds of that can be loosely estimated. Keno's would be about 1/3000 (Chimera mom) * 1/4 (Ginger boy). So around 1/12000!

All I can see now is the famous Star Wars scene, only with slightly altered dialogue.

"You killed my father!"

"No Luke, I fucked your mom!"

Reply TheCatMolloy, March 3rd, 2013, 2:45 pm

@Dolop0Dog: Neat! It's cool that we have the gene markers for coloration in cats identified.

Does anything cause chimericism or does it just crop up occasionally?

Reply DolopODog (Guest), March 3rd, 2013, 7:03 pm

@TheCatMolly Nothing really causes chimericism, it's just a natural occurrence.

It's basically the opposite of having an identical twin. Two fertilized eggs join together very early on, and develop into one individual.

Reply LastRhapsody (Guest), March 4th, 2013, 2:34 am

I was about to ask if that notch in Keno's ear was genetic too somehow, but then I remembered he got it from a freak clippers accident as a kitten. Its been so long, the notch barely registers as an old wound.

And whatever happened to their ninja sister? Is she making cameos every few strips like those purple things with the butts?

Reply manbeardman (Guest), March 4th, 2013, 3:59 am

having cats all my life id say poe and kenos coloring from a calico mother is fairly common

Reply TheCatMolloy, March 4th, 2013, 4:10 am

@LastRhapsody: Every few stips? Bummy's in EVERY strip.

Aya and/or Rremly show up whenever there's an exterior shot of the building showing the third floor. The Catharsis site went down years ago, so it's just a shout-out to an old friend.

When Catharsis left off, there was a love triangle forming between the King of the Dust Bunnies, Aya, and Baxter the squirrel. Aya was also getting drawn in to the never-ending war between the Dust Bunnies and the evil parasitic Dust Mites in the Kingdom Under the Chair.

There's a 72 episode epic there in which Aya becomes Ninja Queen of the Dust Bunnies and the love triangle gets resolved. This isn't even addressing the fact that Aya started walking on her hind legs and using human poses during her run on Catharsis (which I'd want to keep because all her transitions could be adorable ninja poses).

If Aya returns to the pages of Neko the Kitty, she'd be coming in at the end of that story, and I don't know how that story goes yet.

Reply Sup (Guest), March 4th, 2013, 12:57 pm

Huh, the Aya thing sounds...interesting. Do you have a link to the comic? I mean, tbh, it's not my type of thing (though I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying...it's not my type of thing :P), I'd still like to see what you mean by the hind legs thing. Is she drawn a little bit like Jim Davis drew Garfield in his more recent years, or how Ursula draws...well...most of her non-human characters?

Reply Niflare (Guest), March 4th, 2013, 2:29 pm

Kittens Soo... question. Will muffin/puddles ever show up in the comic? those are the only other kittens i think have yet to reappear in the comic.

Reply magic_beefy, March 4th, 2013, 3:38 pm

RIP Catharsis @Sup: Catharsis had ended a long time ago as Gar, or TheCatMolloy as he is going by now, said above and the site has gone down, there was a site that you could find the old archives from it but I can't remember what the site is or which comic number I saw it on, it should still be in the Neko archives somewhere in all the comments but that link could have failed too.
I really do miss that comic, used to read it along with this one way back when (early 2003) but then lost access to the computer I had the favorites on and forgot all the sites

Reply Morbie, March 4th, 2013, 8:12 pm

Well that was a marathon It took me 8-10 hours, but I've now both started and caught up with your entire comic. Thank you for the many giggles.

Geek Moment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_coat_genetics has way more than you ever wanted to know about colors - basically, yes, a male cat will get red/black color from Mom (who can have both) but white masking genes and other pattern genes can come from Dad. If Maisy and Neko are both white-masking heterozygotes (Neko with a red base explaining his tail stripe, and Maisy both red and black), he could pass the white mask to Keno (explaining his white stripe), and pass no masking to Poe - meanwhile, Maisy could pass red to Keno and black to Poe. All perfectly plausible, even with other variations in the kitten-pile. Also, either Mom, Dad, or kittens may have multiple genomes via chimericism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimera_(genetics) ) which is the main culprit of the rare male calico - incidentally, this means the masking that Neko passes to his kids may be utterly unrelated to the masking he exhibits himself, which would explain why Keno's white stripe is essentially the inverse of Neko's. In short, they're a plausible cat-family without any extra daddies.

Tautograms Does Poe speak in Tautograms on purpose? He does it here and in the next strip.

Reply NtKGar, October 27th, 2014, 3:09 am

It's something he does quite a bit.
