There was some talk regarding tattoos in the comments under yesterday's strip (someone wants to get one of Neko in his tank from this strip).

There was a bit of back-and-forth between tattoo enthusiasts and people who don't know why anyone would ever get a tattoo. Neither group's choices really affect the other group, but hey, SNES or Genesis? Arguing's fun!

My own take is that if you're intending to get a tattoo, you should consider the design carefully seeing as getting them removed is such a hassle. The most important question to ask yourself when selecting a tattoo design is "Will I still think this is cool in ten years?"

That's the anti-tattoo argument in a nutshell: you can't predict your own changing tastes. Also don't get one on your face or anywhere you can't cover up.

On the other hand, people who like tattoos like tattoos. That doesn't mean they like 'em indiscriminately.

So why are people getting tattoos of characters from a semi-obscure webcomic? Well...in and of itself that might have some cache in certain circles, I suppose. I'd also like to think the people getting the tattoos have some sort of special affinity with the characters. I take it as solid proof that people like NtK, which is both humbling and gloatworthy.

The main thing that I think makes Neko & Co a good choice for tattoos, though, is that they're cute cartoon kitties. Whether or not people know the actual character: cute kitty. If you're going to get a tattoo anyway, it's a solid choice.

Also the lines are pretty simple, which minimises the chances of the tattoo artist fucking up.

Indeed Who wouldn't want a Tattoo of a Cute Kitty like Neko or Keno or even Poe for that matter on their body.
But to actually get the Tattoo is that persons choice. Nobody else's.

I would never get a tattoo just because of the needle

Reply RoboKitty, March 22nd, 2012, 9:42 am

Tattoos I would get one, but tattoos aren't legal in Oklahoma until you're 18. Unless you have a parent with you or you go to someone unprofessional. Honestly, I don't want anyone unlicensed permanently inking something into my skin... I'm not that brave.

Reply Vince Velcen (Guest), March 22nd, 2012, 10:09 am

@RoboKitty Having an Unlicensed Tattoo Artist is not only bad, but it's also a good way to damage ones body.
It doesn't matter if you were "Brave" or not...
Most don't even clean their tools after it's been used. Who knows what they have been carrying.

Reply NtKGar, March 22nd, 2012, 11:14 am

Yeah, only reason to get a tattoo from an unlicensed artist is if you're in prison and want to join a gang.

I heard Kyle Gas or Glass of Tenacious D has a sponge bob tattoo. I'm not sure how accurate that is since I only liked one of their songs and didn't bother to follow up on it.

Tattoos A friend of mine is a teacher, and has a tattoo. So he gets a lot of his pupils come up to him and telling him they want a tattoo too. The advice he gives them, which I think is sound, is: Take the design you want, and print it out. Hang it above your bed, and look at it every day. If you still love it in a year's time, get it tattooed.

That said, I got the design for my tattoos off the internet a day before I went to get them done, and I still love them seven years on. But I'm all mature and stuff.
