So I went to see Priest in the cinema the other day. I hadn't heard anything about it, but the thing in the cinema said it was a post-apocalyptic adventure about a priest hunting down vampires, and that was good enough for me.
It's a film that pretty much lives up to what it promises. The action and dialogue are very highly stylised, there are futuristic motorcycles with jet engines on the front, and they look cool. The priest has special priest gadgets for killing vampires, and looks cool using them (the scene where he pops the shuriken up out of his bible is particularly nifty). The vampires themselves are nasty cgi critters with no eyes, I missed the start of the animated intro, so I didn't get their origin story. The animation in the intro was pretty slick, though. I don't know if it's representative of the original comic, but it got me interested.
Anyway, it's a good compact little action movie. The plot moves from action set-piece to action set-piece efficiently, and the action scenes are varied and kinetic. Scenery, props and costumes are all well-designed and make a believable and cool stylised world for warrior priests to battle a horde of vampires and one Dracula. It's one I'd recommend seeing in the cinema in 3D, it's very much a visual film, it's all about looking cool, which isn't a bad aspiration for a movie. It does what it does well and deserves the sequel that's so heavily hinted towards in the denoument.
Also I just want to remind everyone that nominations for the 2011 SmackJeeves Awards close on the 15th, so if you're an avid Nekolyte and want us to win a prize, don't forget to say so in the linked forum topic.
Aw dude, you rocked the lighting on scientist Neko in the third panel!
There's been an absolute glut of vampire movies lately, so it was good to see one where not only was there something a little different tried with the vamps, but for once, they were really monsters, not heartsick, mopey, f*&(£^% sparkly bastards.
