The first two panels were lifted from a Dungeons & Dragons game I've been playing with a group of friends. Is forgetting stuff like that a common feature of tabletop RPGs?

Forgetting stuff like that is most definitely a good way to make DnD more fun. Also not uncommon for people to forget about characters like Cockleigh until they become important again.
